Never heard of Scratch before? That's totally fine. By the end of this article, you'll have gone from zero to building your first real project on Scratch — and it'll take you less than 8 minutes.
Scratch is a coding platform for kids, built by MIT. Instead of typing code, kids drag and drop blocks to build things such as games, animations, stories, you name it. It's free at scratch.mit.edu, works right in the browser, and there's nothing to install. Kids as young as 6 can jump straight in.
🟨 Events (Yellow)

🟧 Control (Orange)

🟦 Motion (Blue)
makes things move
🟪 Looks (Purple)
changes appearance and makes characters speak
Open your browser and go to scratch.mit.edu then click “Start Creating” on the homepage. You can start making projects right away without signing up. (You can always create an account later if you want to save your work.)
Before doing anything else, try clicking the blue block called:

The orange cat on the screen will move right away. That’s coding — it’s really that simple.
Drag the code blocks to make the cat walk in a square shape, then click the green flag at the top. The cat will start moving automatically right away.
💡 Try this: change the number in “move 10 steps” to 50
Then click the green flag again — notice the difference? That’s what “editing code” looks like

At the bottom-right corner of the screen, you’ll see the “Choose a Sprite” and “Choose a Backdrop” buttons. Click them to pick any character or background you like — there are hundreds to choose from.
Try making the cat move in a star shape using the “Point in direction” block. If you get stuck, ask your teacher for a little help.
What age can kids start learning Scratch?
Kids can start as young as 6 years old. No English or coding background is needed.
Do they need coding experience first?
Not at all. Scratch is designed especially for beginners.
What’s the difference between online classes and learning at a center?
Online classes are convenient and can be done from home. In-person classes give kids more direct interaction with the teacher.
At CO-DE Academy, we offer Scratch courses for kids aged 6 and up. Classes are project based, so students learn by building real projects in every session. We offer both online classes and in-person learning in Bangkok.
Our teachers understand kids — not just code 💛
